Merlin is surrounded by other literary characters from a Celtic mythological background or Arthurian legend. The best known are the Blaise scribe who records his story, the King Arthur whom he watches and protects, and the fairy Viviane he loves. Morgane and Viviane are his pupils.

Mordred (Gwydion) is a character from the Arthurian legend, son of King Arthur and his half-sister, Morgane (or Morgause in the older versions). He is often presented as the half-brother of Gauvain, Agravain, Gaheris and Gareth, son of Morgause.

Galaad, Galahad, or Galaaç is the son of the Knight Lancelot du Lac and Ellan, daughter of King Pellès, King Fisher, who holds the Grail. Its name comes from the Welsh Gwalchaved: "summer falcon". He is the youngest knight of the Round Table.

He is the model knight: in addition to being an exceptional knight, he shows exemplary courtesy for all the other knights of his time. Gawain frequently wears King Arthur's sword: Excalibur. Gauvain is Yvain's cousin who is also for him a dear friend.
